- Project Name: Bow Valley Provincial Park Dump Station and Facility Zone
- Project Location: Bow Valley Provincial Park (Near Canmore, Alberta)
- Client: Alberta Environment and Parks
Project Challenge:
SD was retained by Alberta Environment and Parks to design a new RV dump station, collection system, and an onsite wastewater system to service the RV dump station and staff housing/facility zone. The main challenges were working with the environmental sensitivity of a provincial park, and the high strength effluent from the RV dump station.
Environmental/Regulatory Factors:
The design flow of the facility was less than 25 cubic meters/day, so a Provincial Approval was not required. Instead, the system operates under a variance from Municipal Affairs.
Options considered:
Several dump station locations were considered. Ultimately, a new dump station was constructed on the site of the existing smaller dump station since the site was already disturbed. An alternative site was dismissed due to an elk crossing in the proposed dump station location.
Solution:
The system was installed in 2017 and consists of a new 5-lane paved dump station with 30,000 gallon septic/pump tank, an advanced secondary treatment consisting of aeration, settling, and Orenco’s AX100 Treatment, a new STEP collection system serving staff housing/facility buildings, and disposal through effluent trenches.
Result/Performance Data:
Based on four years of operational data, the installed wastewater system is meeting all applicable effluent limits. Further, the dump station is well known as one of the best dump stations in the provincial park system.
